My Journey Building a Travel Agency in Laos as an Expat

When I decided to move to Laos, I didn’t just want to visit I wanted to build something meaningful here. After months of research and on-the-ground experience, I launched Agence de Voyage Laos, a boutique travel agency specialized in tailor-made trips for French-speaking travelers.

This article is my honest first 2 weeks progress report: the challenges, the numbers, the strategy, and what the future looks like.

Why Create a Travel Agency in Laos While Living Here?

Living in Laos gives me a huge advantage. I understand the local culture, I can personally check hotels and activities, and I have direct relationships with the best local tour operators.

Unlike many agencies that operate from Europe or Thailand, everything I offer is rooted in real on-the-ground knowledge. My goal is simple: deliver authentic, high-quality experiences while making travel to Laos easy and stress-free for international clients.

The Real Numbers: French Tourism in Laos is Growing Fast

According to the official Laos National Tourism Development Department, from January to September 2025, more than 42,033 French tourists visited Laos. This represents a strong recovery and growing interest from the French market.

French travelers are particularly attracted to Laos for its authentic culture, UNESCO temples in Luang Prabang, the magnificent Mekong River, and hidden gems and remote journeys in the north.

This data confirms what I saw on the ground: there is real demand for high-quality, personalized travel services in Laos.

My Business Model: Smart & Sustainable

Instead of operating as a traditional travel agency handling all logistics, I focus on a simpler and more scalable model:

I specialize in attracting and qualifying travel leads for Laos.

Through my platform and interactive travel quiz, I collect essential information such as:

  • travel budget
  • number of travelers
  • travel preferences and interests

This allows me to understand exactly what each traveler is looking for before they are connected with a local expert, such as Asia Safari and others.

Once the lead is qualified, I transfer it directly to trusted local travel operators in Laos, who take care of the full travel experience including planning, bookings, and on the ground services/activities.

My role is to ensure that travelers are properly guided and matched with the right local partners, while helping operators receive highly targeted and serious inquiries.

This model creates a win-win system:

  • Local agencies focus on operations instead of marketing
  • I focus on lead generation and customer acquisition

How Much Does a Trip to Laos Really Cost?

For a comfortable, tailor-made trip with good hotels, private transportation, guides, and activities, the average price is around $300 per person per day.

This includes:

  • Boutique and 4-star hotels
  • Private driver and English/French-speaking guide
  • All activities and entrance fees
  • Domestic flights (when needed)

For a 12-day trip, this means approximately $3,600 per person, a fair price for the quality and exclusivity offered.

 

My SEO Strategy: Aiming for Top Positions on Google

One of my main goals is to become a key reference for French-speaking travelers looking to discover and organize trips to Laos.

Although the website is fully written in French to target a Francophone audience (mainly France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada).

This includes search terms such as:

  • “travel agency Laos”
  • “tailor-made trip Laos”
  • “Laos travel planning”
  • “visit Laos itinerary”

The strategy is focused on building strong organic visibility on Google through consistent SEO work over time.

In 2 weeks, I have:

  • Optimized all meta titles and descriptions
  • Improved site structure and internal linking
  • Installed Google Analytics and Search Console
  • Started publishing regular, high-quality blog content
  • Worked on technical SEO (speed, mobile optimization, schema markup)

The keyword “voyager au Laos” has a monthly search volume of around 480 with medium competition, making it realistic to reach page 1 within 6 months with consistent effort.

Challenges I’ve Faced So Far

 

  • Building trust with potential clients from afar
  • Strong seasonality (peak from November to March)
  • Competition from big international platforms

But living here allows me to solve problems faster and offer a much more authentic service.

Over the next 6 months, I plan to:

  • Publish 10+ new detailed travel guides
  • Strengthen partnerships with more local operators
  • Increase visibility on Google and social media
  • Offer more specialized trips (photography tours, wellness retreats, family trips, etc.)
